Brides and grooms speak out – 7 Things I wish I had known before I started to plan my wedding

Brides and grooms speak out

Now that the proposal is done and you’re engaged, the hard part is done….right??? Ehh…..probably not!!
After all the emotion subsides, the planning starts for real and the question is very often, ‘now what?!!!’ There is no shortage of resources for brides and grooms to consider online, no shortage of forums, pages, groups and so on.
What comes first? The dress? The venue? The band? Who has the time to really do everything?
Remember the episode in Friends where Monica is fighting to get her wedding dress…we hope this really doesn’t happen??? But knowing the sort of things to look out for and what to prioritise when is important.
Monica from friends

We Asked Our Customers

At Sax and the city, we’ve built up some great and long-lasting relationships with brides and grooms and so we thought, who better to turn to ask the question than these ‘experts’ and pose the question, What is the one thing you wish you knew before you started to plan your wedding?

And boy, we got some excellent replies which we want to share with you which we know will really be of help to you as you plan your special wedding day.

The invite list

We have all probably seen very witty and cool invitation cards (court summons anyone??) but how many to invite is a big question!!
Maeve and Ciaran, whose wedding we played in May 2019 wrote,
Wedding Invite list;
‘The guest list, over invite by about a good 25% at least! People who we thought would definitely come didn’t and there were lots of people we would have loved to have come but didn’t have the chance to invite. Don’t assume everyone you invite will be able to make it.’
This was echoed by a number of other couples including Cassie and Niall, whose wedding we played June 2019, Cassie wrote,
‘Over invite as so many people pull out right up to literally the last second. On the day though you don’t think twice about it however the stress of worrying about it beforehand plays a part’

To video or not to video…that is the question!!

Cost is a big factor as you consider what to include and what to cut. The whole videographer/photographer debate is one that most couples have and it is never straight forward.
With the advent of smartphones and ancillaries such as Gimbals (we actually use these ourselves and they are great!!!) or lens attachments, the option to capture high quality video doesn’t have to be expensive but on such a big day, do you take the risk and entrust this job to someone in the family?
Wedding vdeo
Clowie and Stephen, whose wedding we played in October 2019, had some wise words in this area,
‘….get a videographer! That’s my only regret. Everyone has opinions, don’t listen and just do what you both want!’

Take your time and enjoy every part

Probably the most overwhelming response we had when we put the question to couples from previous weddings was to enjoy it and, how things pass so quickly and how things have a way of just slotting into place!
Catherine and John, December 2019 said,
‘How quick the day goes for all the planning and how good Dj Sax & the city were going to be amazing’
Aoife and Derek, from a wedding October 2019 echoed this in saying,
‘I wish we had known how quickly the day would fly past, so much planning, and then poof it’s over!’
Steve and Priscilla from a 2016 wedding said,
‘I wish I know how fast the day would go and try and slow down and savor it more!’
Angela and Derek from a wedding last August said,
‘To take in & enjoy every single minute of the planning & organising of the day (the good & the bad!) as the time goes by so quickly in the run up to the big day!’
On this, Niamh and Billy from a wedding May 2019 wrote,
‘I wish I knew how quickly time goes by in the lead up to the wedding and how it’s important to get the little things like mass booklets done ahead of time. I wasn’t anticipating all the visitors calling to the house on the lead up to the wedding. It was so wonderful catching up but left us up until the small hours looking after the smaller details.’
Sarah and Anthony backed this up when they said,
‘That everything will fall into place enjoy all the planning and preparations it’ll all pay off on the day’

As the saying goes, a problem shared is a problem halved, well in the case of wedding planning, the workload shared means that it’s not just one the shoulders of one person. It brings the couple closer together on a big project and is a real test!
Wedding planning
Alicia and Louise is an example of how well a couple can work in planning their big day. Here’s what they had to say,
‘ We were actually thrilled with our wedding! Glad we planned so far in advance and had 2 days with a more intimate wedding and larger wedding party on the 2nd day. I think planning it together all the way through is most important so you both are totally in it together. It was such a fun, engaging and memorable event in Ballybeg we will never forget!!

Before we go…one more great piece of advice!

Of course there are are a lot more things to consider and look at as you plan your wedding. Everyone is different and special and you will, of course, want to put your own stamp on it.
Wedding Part
There are so many variables and so many unknowns. No two weddings are the same and that’s what makes every wedding so unique and special.
We enjoyed reaching out to some of our previous couples and we didn’t have the capacity to put all responses down on this post but I will leave you with one more piece of advice.
This was from Jason and Sean who had a very cool themed wedding last December. Their advice is simple,
‘Your guests remember the three big things, your venue, the food and the music, so don’t worry too much about the small things. Everything falls into place on the day! Enjoy every moment of the planning and lead up to the wedding, it only happens once!’
We can’t top that as an end to the post!!

Major Benefits of Booking a Brass Wedding Band

1.They Sound Awesome

Think of it, how many songs do you know that have some sort of brass riff, or catchy brass line or solo ? From modern to classic pop there’s a lot more than you think, go to a Bruno Mars gig, I bet you’ll see a smoking hot brass section in the corner doing their thing. Even if his music is highly produced and synthesised, he still utilises a brass section to bring another level of colour and texture to his performance.

2. Authenticity

In our opinion there’s nothing worse than a synthesizer playing a popular prominent brass line or solo. Imagine playing pencil full of lead by Paolo Nutini or Tequila on a synthesizer, it just doesn't have the same impact, sound, or energy. Brass solos should be left to brass players, period! Or if you want to start a conga line, can you bring the keyboard out onto the dancefloor for a shuffle? Not really!! But you certainly can with a member of the brass section!

3. The WOW Factor!

Have you ever heard a sax or trumpet solo that made your head turn or take note? That’s the experience you get from wedding bands with brass, that have the ability to lay down a screeching trumpet solo or ripping sax melody. From our experience this is something that transcends to the dancefloor, people pick up on that injection and spike of energy that only a brass player can bring. Any wedding band with brass worth their salt will have brass players with the ability to tackle improvised solos and wow your dancefloor.

 Brass Wedding Bands Are Rare

You might be wondering are there many wedding bands with brass in Ireland, you'll be happy to know there's quite a few, but not as many in comparison to your standard 4 piece wedding band.

Probably because there aren't as many professional brass players as there are guitarists/ bass and keyboard players, which are a dime a dozen in comparison.

With all the options there are  to choose a brass section from, which size and combination is the best for your wedding and what do they have to offer??

What's the the difference between a solo brass instrument or a 4 piece brass section??...keep reading, you're about to find out!

1.The Solo Brass instrument

This is an option that’s pretty common, some bands offer it as an add on, some like ourselves have it as a permanent fixture. The best starting point  and the most common would be tenor saxophone, we would be biased, but it is the universal instrument of choice as a stand alone brass instrument on a gig.

A solo sax blends and fits in well with a rhythm section, compared to a stand alone trumpet, it has a more mellow tone and can cut through the rhythm section when it needs to project, sound wise it just works and has a range that gives added depth to the band and really enhances the sound.

Some bands might substitute solo trumpet or trombone, while they might have some of the range, they don’t quite compliment the sound of the band as well and lack the flexibility that a saxophone can provide.

Those reasons aside, most of the big popular brass solos for live band that you can think of were written for sax, so it just wouldn't sound the same on any other brass instrument.

Best Choice-Tenor Saxophone

brass wedding bands

   2-Piece Brass Section

This tends to work best and is the most commonly used with trumpet and tenor saxophone. It provides the lower range that the tenor sax can bring and is complimented by the top end and soprano range the the trumpet can provide. They just sound awesome together and is just a really good combination,it’s the gold standard.
Some bands might use alternative combinations, maybe trombone and sax or trombone and trumpet and while it does work to an extent it’s still not the same and wouldn't be the best choice in our opinion.
Best combination-Trumpet and Tenor Saxophone

wedding bands with brass

3-Piece Brass Section

If you want to add extra weight and umph to the brass line adding a trombone to the mix gives it extra bunch in the lower register .The standard for this combination is usually:trumpet, tenor sax and trombone and with the proper musical arrangements and charts it sound amazing! Other bands might use alto sax, tenor sax and trumpet in lieu of this combination and while it might suffice to an extent, it's not optimum.

Best Combination-Trumpet,Tenor Sax and Trombone

wedding brass band

4-Piece Brass Section

For the brass lovers who have deep pockets, this is where you’re really beefing up your brass section. But the effect will be completely lost if you don’t use the correct combination of instruments and proper musical charts and arrangements to facilitate them.

I’ve seen 4 piece brass sections consisting of 2 trumpets and sax and the trombone all playing the same charts and brass line, in a nutshell, you might as well of had a solo or  2-piece brass section, because the benefit of 4 was lost due to poor combination and not utilising the correct musical arrangements.

A 4 or 5 piece brass section for a wedding might be considered overkill, this is where the law of diminishing returns may  assume its place. But, if you have the space it can be an awesome combination.

If  you are going to use this figure, I suggest you go for our recommended combination.

Best Combination-Trumpet,Ten Sax,Alto Sax and Trombone
Trumpet, Trumpet 2, Ten Sax and Trombone
All the info might seem a bit overwhelming, but just take note of the recommended options and you’ll be in brass heaven.

Vanessa with our brass section

What is the best brass section for a wedding?

Trumpet and sax option works best, hands down!!
From my experience of being a professional brass player for 16 years and having played with multiple combination throughout my career, I have to honestly admit that the trumpet and sax duo is the best choice of brass section in the context of a wedding party.

A lot of the reason, some are very practical ones!

The more musicians you hire, the bigger the fees. Remember the law of diminishing returns? There's not a huge amount of noticable difference between a 2-piece and a 3-piece or 4-piece brass section, your guests are there to party, not listen to a brass quintet.

If the band does not have their brass section optimised correctly and professionally charted music, you lose the full effect of a large brass section and it just becomes noise on your stage.

Our charts are designed to give a 2-piece brass section a big band sound, any good band will have the same.

This can be a problem with some country house venues, some old country estate venues have marquees where they host their weddings, or have extended the building with a new modern wing built for the purpose.

Two good examples of country houses which are well adapted for this are Clonabreany house in Meath and Lough Rynn Castle in Leitrim, for these venues, throwing in an 8 or a 10 piece band is no problem, but this may not work in a smaller period venue.

A 5 or a 6 piece would be the max in for some of the old period country house that are not extended, or have no marquee. So be sure to check with your venue prior to booking a larger band!!

Final Thoughts and Conclusion

Wedding bands with brass have the ability to add another level of colour and energy to your wedding party, it's no wonder why they have always been popular and are becoming more and more common at weddings, when couples see the potential for an extra special party.
If you are going to take the plunge into the world of wedding bands with brass, just be sure to view the actually combination and line up you're considering live, see if there's any significant benefit from having a 10 piece band over a 6 or 7 piece,  in a live performance, then you'll get a real appreciation for what you're actually booking.

If you're crazy about wedding bands with brass and you can see the real value in booking one, check out what we can offer you on our website Sax and the City Band

Wedding bands Ireland prices 2020 : How much does a wedding band cost in Ireland and why??

Plus bonus material: Average wedding ceremony music cost, DJ and drinks reception music prices. Your full & extensive guide to wedding music prices in Ireland is right here ??

Lets Jump In

We’ve noticed over the years how often newly engaged couples inquire on groups and forums about wedding band prices and the cost of wedding bands in Ireland.

You’re probably wondering where do I start! Right? Maybe you’re thinking: why are they expensive??

It’s a question that’s not as straightforward as you might expect, there are a number of factors that influence wedding band prices and the average wedding band costs in Ireland

In this resource we delve deep into what you can expect to pay for your wedding band in 2020 and why. We also give you the 4 factors that influence wedding band prices and what your final cost may be.

What is the average wedding band cost in Ireland? How much can I expect to pay in 2020?

The short answer: the average wedding band cost/price in Ireland for 2020 according to Weddings Online Survey  was €2,165. Remember, this figure is just a rough average and it can vary greatly depending on the size of the band you prefer, or is within your budget. For example, a 7 piece band is generally going to be more expensive than your average 3 piece band.

wedding band costs ireland

But that’s not the not the only credible study that has been conducted by a prominent online directory, according to research undertaken by OneFabDay, the average paid for a wedding band and DJ was in the region of €2700 euro.

wedding bands ireland prices

You can see there’s a difference of a couple of hundred euros between both surveys, if you exclude the DJ from the One Fab Day results, again, they are reflecting the average, the research conducted by both  leading directories is exceptional, but given the nature of how broad the wedding market is, it doesn’t take into account some other important variables and your unique requirements that may influence your final cost, which we’ll talk about later.

So, to really give you a detailed answer, we’ve taken it one step further and compiled a wedding band price list based on our own data and research.

The first table lays out a rough wedding band price list, it’s divided between agency and independent wedding bands, agencies can be more expensive, in some cases a fee is laid on top of the band price, bear in mind this is not the case with all agencies, but it is a reality with some and I’m obliged to reflect this in the table.

There are other important factors you have to take into account when determining what you can expect to pay , which we’ll jump into in detail now, so keep reading.

4 Factors that influence wedding band prices in Ireland

        1. Number of musicians in the band
        2. Distance
        3. Day of the week
        4. Validation

1. Number of musicians

This is an obvious factor that influences wedding band prices, it’s expected that a 6 piece wedding band costs more than your standard 3 or 4 piece band, more musicians= more fees. This also comes down to a preference and a level of priority- some couples priority will be the entertainment for the guests and will not blink an eye booking a 6 piece band, or a wedding band with brass, others may prefer to spend the resources elsewhere. It comes down to a personal choice.

2. Distance

This involves the distance from your wedding venue to the suppliers base. Generally speaking, wedding suppliers might travel free for the first hour and and apply a 50 euro charge for every hour thereafter.

Travel expense example

6 piece wedding bandBaseYour wedding venue Distance from band base to your venue Expense added on top of band price
Band Price 2,290 Cavan / Westmeath  Clonakilty 700 km round trip 350

Table outlining travel expenses that may wedding band prices

3. Day of the week

This may have a positive affect on your wedding band price, it’s widely understood that wedding bands and suppliers can be much more flexible with their prices on days that are not deemed to be in high demand.

Which days of the week?

This would generally apply to midweek weddings, weddings taking place from Monday to Thursday. For suppliers who do offer this flexibility, the customer can expect to save anywhere between 10-20% off their quoted wedding band prices in most cases, possibly sometimes more if you drive a bargain

6 Piece Wedding Band Price Midweek deduction 100 euro  Midweek Price/Cost
 €2,290 €100€ 2,190

However, there’s one day of the year that incurs a larger price and that’s New Years Eve. You may expect to pay an additional 10-25% for the option of having your wedding on this desirable date.

It’s considered a night when people (including musicians) may want to spend time with their family and friends, they are sacrificing their time and personal life on that special day to work, and just like in any other job, the employee would be remunerated to reflect this.

New years eve wedding band price list example

4.Validation & Demand

Couples value wedding suppliers who have strong customer reviews and validation. Bands who have a proven track record with a large selection of live videos of weddings, verified customer reviews and a wedding award thrown in to boot, can expect to have much stronger demand than their competition. Couples are prepared to pay more for quality, for a wedding band that they can count on, to give them the service they want. Wedding bands with this sort of demand & proof of providing an exceptional service can expect to command a higher wedding band price, like in any other industry.

Why are wedding band prices so high?? Are wedding suppliers ripping us off?

This does come up from time to time and at face value I can see why couples might think this, but I’ve yet to meet a wedding supplier who was swimming in money. Or driving the latest Mercedes Benz, unless it’s a long wheelbase sprinter that’s clapped out from one too many Killarney weddings.

It’s a living wage for most suppliers

Most are just trying to make a living, they only have a few days a week to earn that income and weddings are seasonal with high and low peaks throughout the year. There are high costs associated with advertising and running a business in a crowded market place, with all the trappings that come with it being a sole trader, or limited company.

Weddings are expensive

The short answer to this is that wedding suppliers tend to spend a lot of time on site, a huge amount of effort and qualification goes into the preparation of a customers wedding. It’s not a trade or profession where you can just rock up and start providing your services, it takes years of validation and attention, and no matter how good you are, you’re only as good as your last gig.

Average wedding band costs in ireland

You have to be invested in your service and give your customer the best experience, answering calls out of hours and going the extra mile, which is always a requirement. There’s also the associated costs and overheads of running a business, which, like any entreprise, have to be factored in to the price in order for it to be viable.

Brides and Grooms are heavily invested, financially and emotionally in their special day.

Naturally, there’s a strong obligation on the supplier to become a part of that commitment, to provide an exceptional service, to help you achieve your goals for your wedding and rightly so, a wedding is an important life changing occasion, that requires the experience and expertise of qualified, validated professionals.

You get what you pay for, right?

This generally tends to be true!

The easiest way to find out if a band is worth the money they are charging is to simply view them at a wedding band showcase and search independent wedding band reviews  to educate yourself, view as many as possible and you’ll be able to seperate quality from the mediocre and the poor very quickly.

How To Get The best Value Possible

Do your homework! Compile a list of bands you like and get their prices and all associated costs, measure from what they charge but also from the return you can expect to get in the form of entertainment value. You can only gauge and get a sense of this by seeing them perform live and engaging with them 1-on-1. Focus on the music, see how attentive they are to your questions and if you can clearly obtain an honest and truthful view of what they can provide.

Yeah, I just said it! You wouldn’t think an ancient word like that would still exist in post bust, back to boom Ireland, but it still has its place, here’s why:

Let’s say you’ve left it little late to pick your wedding band and most seemed to be booked up, not something we’d recommend but it’s more common than you’d think!!

You might have leverage

For the bands that are available, the likelihood of them filling the date on relatively short notice is unlikely(not impossible) and like all businesses they’d prefer to be earning on a potential work night. See what you can negotiate and work together, the chances of you coming away with a deal are pretty good.

I REALLY wouldn’t recommend leaving it on the long finger to book your band though! The more time you have at your disposal equals more options, which will ultimately lead you to better choice of quality bands and value and more maneuverability when it comes to wedding band prices.

It ultimately comes down to your preference and priorities and what you can afford

It really comes down to what you can afford but also what you consider to be good value. Some couples would have no hesitation spending €3000 or €4000 euro on a band, they may place more importance on entertainment and the potential lasting impression and memories it can produce. To these couples it represents as a good return on their investment, and yes, they may have deeper pockets too!

Others couples would prefer to spend that extra cash on their honeymoon, so it comes down to your preference and priorities too.

How To Choose Your Bridesmaids: By Expectation or Instinct?

How to choose your Bridesmaids

Choosing your Bridesmaids Should Be Fun!

You might already have subconsciously chosen your bridesmaids, but obligation, guilt or reciprocation is starting to creep in and cloud your judgement.

Unfortunately for some brides it can be a catalyst for stress and unnecessary arguments, after all choosing your bridesmaids is meant to be an exciting and momentous  occasion.

Before you start feeling stressed over a decision that should be an exciting one,we’re sharing a few of our best tips with you, to remind you what’s really important and show you how to  choose your bridesmaids with confidence. The first thing we want you to do is to throw out any ‘rules’ you think there might be when it comes to choosing your bridesmaids.

Ok? Now, keeping reading:

Bridal party size – is there a perfect number?

Should bridal party size be considered when choosing your bridesmaids?Traditionally, there is the same number of bridesmaids as groomsmen, yes. But, before you accept this practice as a given, we want you to consider this. Would you prefer to look at your photographs and see perfect symmetry in the number of men to women, or would you prefer to see the smiling faces of a bunch of people who love you dearly and made your day feel incredibly special?

who can you count on when choosing your bridesmaids?

How to choose Bridesamids

Although being a bridesmaid is a lot of fun, the role includes some responsibilities as well. When choosing your bridesmaids, it’s worth thinking about who will be helpful to have on your team. Who is always on time and there for you when they say they will be? Or, can you count on them to lift your mood when you’re feeling stressed? These are fantastic qualities to have in your bridesmaids.

Personalities – who is easy to get along with?
Do you have a friend you love dearly, but has a strong take-charge attitude? Consider whether it will be helpful to have someone you can turn to if you start to flounder with wedding planning. Or, will their presence be too dominating among your group of bridesmaids? When thinking about how to choose your bridesmaids, it’s important to consider whether they will get along well in a group. The last thing you need is drama from those who should be supporting you and making things easier (and more fun!).

Finances – can they afford to be a bridesmaid?
Finance certainly isn’t a romantic topic, but weddings and finances are closely tied. Being a bridesmaid can be surprisingly expensive! It can be particularly challenging for your friends who are living abroad or going through a large change in their own lives. Have a thoughtful conversation with them and say something like: “you’re one of my top choices for bridesmaid. Of course, I would love to have you, but if being in the wedding party will be too expensive, there are other ways you can be involved.”

Friends or family – how to choose?
You may have heard that a good rule of thumb for picking bridesmaids is to choose who you have known the longest or who is family. If that feels like a comfortable way for you to choose your bridesmaids, that’s completely acceptable. But, what will probably make you happier is to surround yourself with the women who know you best, the ones who bring out the best in you and make your life brighter.

How to let ladies down
It’s a good idea to get in touch with any ladies in your life who were expecting to be asked, but are not going to be part of your bridesmaid squad. Without going into details, let them know that their friendship means a great deal to you and you’re sorry you weren’t able to include them. Try offering them a different role, like making a toast or being the MC.

How to Choose Bridesmaids

A final word on how to choose your bridesmaids
Choosing your bridesmaids should be about inviting supportive, uplifting and fun women to share this special time of your life. Trust your instincts and be confident in your choice. After reading this, if you’re still worried about letting people down when you choose your bridesmaids, remember that if you handle the situation thoughtfully, everyone should be able to respect your decision.
